City of Hermosa Beach --- City Election of 2001

REBUTTAL TO ARGUMENT AGAINST MEASURE H (REPEAL OF UUT)

It was not surprising that 60% of the voters opted to retain the UUT. They were inundated by a disingenuous campaign of fear and money that outspent repeal advocates 60 to 1. Who backed the UUT? The supporters numbered teamsters, public employee unions, the Chamber of Commerce and select plaza merchants among others. For a complete list of contributors as well as additional source documents from city records supporting our position, See our website

Why did some merchants support the UUT? See website

At the end of each fiscal year since the last election (above and beyond maintaining reasonable contingency funds) embarrassing surpluses remained despite record spending on increased public safety and generous pay and pension increases to city employees. All this occurred as the private sector began to downsize.

What do city employees earn? See website

Will we retain vital services and city employees? Will much needed repairs to our neighborhood streets and public sewers be continued? Yes!

Will we retain control of our financial future? Yes! See website

Our surpluses roughly equal the UUT. To residents who see paying the UUT as a reasonable civic contribution, we suggest giving instead to our schools and library, none of which runs a surplus. They have an enormous effect on our quality of life and property values.

Vote YES to REPEAL the UUT

Katharine B. Bergstrom

Shirley B. Cassell
