City of Hermosa Beach --- City Election of 200

REBUTTAL TO ARGUMENT AGAINST MEASURE F (COASTAL INITIATIVE)

As it stands now, we have NO RULES or STANDARDS OF CONDUCT for COMMERCIAL EVENTS.   Establishing standards is what this measure is about.

You have seen the trend towards commercialization of our beach. The City Council continues to encourage commercialization.  You will see more paid events, and larger events, unless this measure is passed.

Paid admission for the beach has started, and there is no end in sight. The Beach Bash promoter says, "I want people to feel they're at the Forum or Staples Center." Is this what you want for our most precious resource?

Massive stands and fences go up, large trucks set up booths--and will soon stay up all summer, unless we establish standards. You've seen the trend, and this trend will continue unless this measure is passed.

True, this measure is lengthy, because protecting the beach and being fair to all sides can be complicated. Specific details are subject to change at the Coastal Commission. The fundamental question in front of you is this: Would you like more public input in determination of what events we have on the beach? Would you like more accountability from corporations profiting from beach events?

The City's popular and traditional events will not be "hindered or eliminated" by this measure. There will be no additional costs to the city for water testing, and a Marine Research Facility is not required by this measure.

Vote YES to regain peace and quiet for our beach.
