City of Hermosa Beach --- City Election of 2001

ARGUMENT IN FAVOR OF COASTAL MEASURE "F"

Dear Friends and Neighbors:

WE are at a crossroads. We must decide if we want more commercial events.

As the City has become a more commercially aggressive enterprise, so has it attracted more and more aggressive commercial event promoters.

We've witnessed a trend towards the intensification of commercial events to the point that we're awash in blaring PA's, thirty foot inflatable beer advertisements, traffic snarls, parking nightmares, rampant commercialism, visual pollution, increased aerial advertisements, unruly crowds, etc.

Is 11+ commercial events in the 12 weeks of summer - 3 years in a row too much?

Now, further aggravating the situation, City Councilmembers recently changed our laws to allow PAID ADMISSION to an unlimited number of commercial beach events, with the ability to approve more events like the Mervyns' Beach Bash with no public hearing, no public input, or public notice, and no Coastal Permit required!

The Mervyns' Beach Bash is like a "bomb" hitting the City. The "Bash" requires more parking than the entire public parking supply of the City combined! And worse, it draws the worst elements of society to our city. During the event, residents east of PCH reported "Crips" gang graffiti sprayed on 30 homes.

Is this what we want for our community?

While we recognize some events have historical roots in the community, the events that exist today have little in common with the community based, small scale, non-commercial events of just a few years ago.

To be fair, we've written this measure to require approval by the Coastal Commission - here the opponents can argue for changes to address their concerns.

Read the City Attorneys description (last line) "… for consideration by the Coastal Commission."

If you agree things have gone over the top - VOTE YES to send this critical issue to the Coastal Commission.
