City of Hermosa Beach --- Candidate Statements

STATEMENT OF: Robert Benz

CANDIDATE FOR: City Treasurer

Recent regulations properly restrict investment of City Funds in only the safest portfolios. Yet, the City Council can jeopardize those same investments with improper allocation of restricted tax revenues, increasing expenditures in excess of revenues or exposing the City to litigation expense. In spite of this enormous potential risk, the current Treasurer has never offered any public financial opinion.

As City Treasurer, I pledge to provide the City Council with an INDEPENDENT financial analysis and consequence from their action. The Office of City Treasurer would become an ombudsman for fiscal restraint. I will provide each budget meeting with an independent comprehensive analysis of the City's spending in relation to its revenues. I would make sure that the City doesn't spend money which is restricted or subject to loss through initiative.

Through eight years as City Councilman, I have been consistently opposed to the Council's penchant for raising taxes and excess spending. Through these years, I have used my extensive knowledge of City finances to effectively curb excess bureaucracy. I will continue that role as City Treasurer, insuring that the City's investments are safe and secure and providing information for prudent City decisions.
