![]() Argument Against Measure WThe beach was donated to the City a century ago to be preserved as a public beach, and has since been preserved as a sand beach for use by pedestrians. The City Council is now asking the electorate whether a portion of the beach should be paved to create a separate bikeway. This measure would give any three council members a MANDATE to pour millions of dollars of concrete on our beach. Do we really want to give them CARTE BLANCHE to do that? NO, because: Our beach is a unique, precious resource which gives Hermosa Beach its special character. Reducing the size of our beach will INCREASE congestion there, and activities such as volleyball and beach concerts will be displaced by concrete. Putting bicycles on the beach would create new hazards, increasing the risk of injuries from bicyclists traveling at higher speeds colliding with pedestrians crossing two thoroughfares and bicyclists being hit or distracted by spiked volleyballs, frisbees, footballs, softballs, etc. A separate bikeway on the beach would be an eyesore. Maintenance costs for the bikeway will be a permanent drain on revenues. Unlike Manhattan Beach, our beach is narrower and we have no elevated berm separating the proposed bikeway from the beach. The proposed bikeway would simply substitute one set of problems for another, while substantially encroaching on the beach. Congestion during peak periods during weekends and holidays does not warrant a separate bikeway, especially absent real efforts to control bike traffic and require responsible use of bicycles. We've paved over virtually all of Los Angeles County to alleviate congestion. Shouldn't we draw the line here to preserve our beach for sand-related beach activities?
