Impartial Analysis of Measure W

ADVISORY VOTE ONLY:

Should the City Council consider constructing a separate bike path on the beach?

YES

NO

Measure W asks for voter opinion on whether the City Council should consider constructing a separate bike path on the beach.

The City obtained a court judgment in 2002 that allows for construction of a path separate from the Strand for bicyclists and skaters, similar to the bike path in Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach. The Council would like to know whether the voters favor the idea of such a bike path.

This is an advisory measure, meaning that it seeks voter opinion and is not binding on the City Council. Aside from obtaining the court judgment, no work has been undertaken on planning or constructing a bike path. If further consideration were given to such a project, the City would have to prepare plans and cost estimates, conduct environmental review, determine financing and obtain approval from the California Coastal Commission. The process would involve public hearings at which all interested persons could express their views.

A "yes" vote means that you favor further consideration of a separate bike path. A "no" vote means that you do not feel that the Council should consider the matter further.
