City of Hermosa Beach --- City Election of 2001

ARGUMENT AGAINST MEASURE  "F" ( COASTAL  INITIATIVE )

DO NOT BE FOOLED BY ITS TITLE! VOTE "NO" ON "F"

Despite being called "The Coastal Conservation Act", it does NOTHING to improve our beach, our ocean, or our community.  This is the same ordinance our neighbors in Manhattan Beach soundly rejected.

BE AN INFORMED VOTER…. READ THE PROPOSED INITIATIVE!

It is over 8 pages of fine print. It is poorly written, contradictory, and open to varied interpretation.  Do NOT vote for anything you can't understand!  It is NOT good law!

As far as we can tell:

It requires four annual beach clean-up days. The City already schedules more clean-up days than that, through groups such as Heal the Bay, the Scouts, and the Hermosa Valley School.

It requires money to be diverted from necessary projects like street repairs to fund a "Marine Research Facility".

It does NOTHING to improve water quality, it merely requires costly additional testing beyond what groups such as Heal the Bay already provide.

It allows special event organizer's to pay NOTHING to the City for the additional services they require. It requires the taxpayers to bear these costs.

This initiative will affect EVERYTHING that occurs in "The Coastal Zone" which extends from the Pier to Ardmore Avenue. It could hinder or even eliminate some of the City's most enjoyable events such as the Valley School Halloween Carnival, The St. Patrick's Day Parade, Aloha Days, The "Project Touch" Car Show, The Farmer's Market and many traditional surfing and volleyball competitions. It creates a bureaucratic nightmare for our local non-profit groups who wish to sponsor fund raising events.

We all want our ocean and beaches to remain clean and available for all, but this initiative does NOTHING to improve our community and HURTS our local non-profit organizations.

Vote " NO " on Measure "F"
