Filing Procedure

Applications are accepted on a continuous basis and must be made on a City Application for Employment which may be obtained at the City of Hermosa Beach Personnel Department, 1315 Valley Drive, Room 203, (310) 318-0200; Fire Department, 540 Pier Avenue, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254, or by sending a SASE. City Hall hours are Monday through Thursday 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Examples of Duties

Reserve Firefighters are required to work one 24-hour shift per week. Under direct supervision of a Fire Captain and the Reserve Coordinator, the Reserve Firefighter provides care to sick and injured persons, transports patients to local area hospitals, and works alongside regular, on-duty firefighters. Duties include, but are not limited to: responding to medical and fire alarms with an engine company and paramedic personnel; performs medical care on persons at the level of Emergency Medical Technician I-A; performs cardio-pulmonary resuscitation; carries patients from remote and obscure locations to their assigned ambulance; transports patients to local area hospitals. Using skills learned from the Basic Firefighter-I Academy, Reserves will assist in fire prevention, fire suppression, public education, fire equipment/apparatus maintenance, and fire station up-keep.

Minimum Qualifications To Apply

Must possess and provide proof of the following at the time of application:

  • Equivalent to graduation from high school
  • Class "C" CA Driver's License
  • CA State Fire Marshal Firefighter I Academy
  • Emergency Medical Technician I-A
  • CPR Card (Health Card Provider)
  • Completion and proof of either the L.A./O.C. Chiefs' Physical Abilities Test or the Candidate Physical Ability Test (within one year of appointment)

Required By Time Of Appointment

  • CA Ambulance Driver's License
  • DMV medical card (green card)
  • CA DMV driving record print out (within 30 days)

Employment Process

All applications will be reviewed and selected qualified candidates will be invited to an oral board interview. The interview will evaluate the candidate's education, training, work experience and general suitability for the position. As a result of the interview, one or more of the applicants may be considered for employment and be required to pass a background investigation.

Under Federal Law, all new employees must produce proof of eligibility to work in the United States. This requires presenting at the time of appointment, an original or certified copy of a Social Security card and California Driver's License or other suitable documentation. Final appointment is contingent upon verification of documentation.

About the City

The City of Hermosa Beach is a 1.3 square mile, general law City with a population of 18,566. The City is located 22 miles from the Los Angeles Civic Center and 5 miles south of the Los Angeles International Airport, at the heart of the "South Bay" region.

The five-member City Council is elected at large. One member of the City Council serves as Mayor on a rotating basis. In addition to the City Council, the City Clerk and City Treasurer are elected to office.

The City has a budget of $31,685,765 and approximately 137 full time employees. Hermosa Beach is a full service City, with its own Police Department and Fire Department.

About the Department

The Hermosa Beach Fire Department consists of eighteen sworn employees who provide protection of life and property within the City of Hermosa Beach from fires, explosions and natural disasters. The Department also provides paramedical care at incidents ranging from simple first aid to life-threatening medical or traumatic injuries. The Fire Department also administers the City's Hazardous Materials and Civil Defense programs.
